Should I Repair or Replace My Furnace or AC?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer.

We repair systems every day, and many repairs absolutely make sense. But one of the biggest things homeowners should understand is this:

Most systems are not replaced because they completely stop working forever overnight.

They’re replaced because they become unreliable.

In Utah, we typically see the highest number of major system failures during:

  • January (extreme heating demand)
  • July/August (extreme cooling demand)

That’s when older systems finally hit their limit.

Around the 18–20 year mark, many systems begin reaching the stage where major components become increasingly unpredictable. Even if the system is still operational today, reliability starts becoming a real concern.

Once systems push into the 25+ year range, we often begin looking at things through three lenses:

  • Reliability
  • Safety
  • Repair investment

At that point, continuing to heavily invest in aging equipment can sometimes become difficult to justify long-term.

Our goal is never to pressure homeowners into replacing systems prematurely. We’d rather help people understand the realistic condition of their equipment so they can make informed decisions before an emergency situation forces one.
