What Does SEER Rating Mean?

SEER: Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio

SEER, or Seasonal Energy Efficiency measures the cooling efficiency of an air conditioner or heat pump.

Higher SEER equipment can absolutely make sense in the right home, but higher efficiency doesn’t automatically mean better comfort or better value for everyone.

One thing homeowners should be cautious about is being pushed into high-efficiency or multi-stage systems without evaluating whether:

  • The ductwork supports it
  • The home is properly sized for it
  • The airflow is adequate
  • The added complexity makes sense long-term

In some homes, a simpler properly-installed system can outperform an expensive high-efficiency setup installed on poor ductwork.
