Why Is My Basement So Cold in the Summer?

This is one we hear constantly in rambler-style homes.

Most air conditioning systems are sized primarily for the above-grade living space, because that’s where the majority of the heat load exists.

Basements naturally stay cooler underground, so during summer it’s very common for them to become colder than the main floor.

A few things that can help:

  • Partially closing some basement vents
  • Making sure upstairs vents are fully open
  • Replacing dirty filters regularly
  • Checking airflow balance throughout the home
